If you are a resident of Belgium and wish to purchase property in Spain, you will need a Spanish tax identification number, also known as the NIE number. This unique number is mandatory for foreigners who wish to carry out legal or fiscal actions in Spain. Since May 2025, a new, simplified procedure has been implemented at the Spanish consulate in Brussels. This recently introduced procedure allows you to obtain your NIE number more efficiently, without the need for a prior appointment. In this article, you will find a step-by-step guide on how to easily apply for your NIE number in Belgium.

What is an NIE number and why do you need it?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal identification number used for official and fiscal transactions in Spain. It is required for various activities, including:

  • buying or selling real estate
  • opening a Spanish bank account
  • signing contracts for water, electricity, or internet services
  • filing tax returns
  • obtaining a driver's license or vehicle registration
  • registering as a temporary or permanent resident

Whether you are purchasing a second home or renting, the NIE is essential. Without this number, the notarial deed cannot be executed, which could delay or halt your project. Through the consulate, you will receive a document that will be registered in central databases, so you don’t need to worry about that process.

New Application Procedure via Brussels (since May 2025)

The Spanish consulate in Brussels has been implementing a new procedure since May 2025. The major change: you no longer need to make an appointment by email. Instead, the procedure is now completed in two steps:

  1. Online preparation: fill out the application form on the website
  2. Visit the consulate without an appointment: with a digital access pass on your smartphone

Thanks to this update, the application process is smoother and avoids administrative hassle related to appointments.

Step-by-Step Guide for NIE Application

Step 1: Start the Digital Application

Go to the website of the consulate in Brussels and individually fill out the digital application forms. You will find the form on the official consulate website: NIE application form. Repeat this for each person who needs an NIE number. You will receive a pass for each person.

Step 2: Receive the Access Pass via Email

You will receive the following by email:

  • the completed EX 15 form
  • the Modelo 790 (for paying the fee)
  • your personal digital access pass to go to the consulate

Step 3: Print and Sign

Download the received documents (EX 15, Modelo 790) and print them. Also, attach a clear copy of your identity card or passport. Sign all indicated places on the forms. If you are applying for an NIE for a minor, also include a copy of the parent’s passport who is signing the application on behalf of the child.

Step 4: Visit the Consulate in Brussels Without an Appointment

During opening hours, go to the Spanish consulate in Brussels. No appointment is required. Show your digital access pass and a valid ID at the reception. Make sure to bring both documents (EX-15, Modelo 790) so that your file can be submitted immediately.

Address: Rue Ducale 85–87, 1000 Brussels

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 08:30–11:00 (closed on Belgian and Spanish public holidays)

Step 5: Payment and Official Submission of the NIE Application

You will pay the administrative fee of €9.84 (in 2025) on-site with your bank card. Your file will then be processed and sent to the competent Spanish authorities. The average processing time is 2 to 3 weeks. Afterward, you will receive your official NIE certificate by email.

Applying for an NIE Number in Spain: How Does it Work on Site?

If you are already in Spain, you can apply for your NIE at a local police station or extranjería office (foreigners' office), depending on the region where you are staying. This procedure typically requires an appointment through the provincial extranjería website. The documents and fees are the same. Often, you will receive your number even faster, sometimes on the same day.

Conclusion: With the Right NIE Number, You’re Ready for Your Spanish Property Story

The NIE number is an essential administrative key for anyone buying, renting, or leasing property in Spain. Thanks to the updated procedure at the Spanish consulate in Brussels, applying for it in 2025 has become easier. However, good preparation is still crucial: having the correct forms, providing a proper motivation, and carefully following the steps will make the difference between a smooth process and unnecessary delays.
